Nazareth College is committed to providing all students with the opportunity to maximise their individual skills in reading, writing, and speaking English. This is a core area of study from Year 7 through to the completion of VCE, and the College has implemented a series of specialised programs to facilitate the most effective and efficient learning processes.
The curriculum for English in Year 7 through to Year 10 is conducted in accordance with the VELS dimensions of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. During Year 7 and Year 8, students participate in the Reading to Learn program. This program is designed to specifically target and develop students’ skills in understanding and responding to varied styles of texts in a manner which is appropriate to the specific style. At Year 9 the English program seeks to support and enhance the unique curriculum, while preparing students for Senior School.
In order to ensure that students are able to comfortably utilise a broad range of research and resource mediums, technology is embraced and explored through the use of numerous educational websites and search engines, as well as the use of software such as Kahootz. Exposure to varied forms of resources encourages students to employ a range of skills to research a topic, and to become competent and confident in utilising the internet effectively as a research and resource tool.
The skills acquired in Years 7 to 9 English culminate in Senior School English where several English studies are offered to cater to the needs and goals of each student. For example, English Literature is offered as an elective at Year 10 along with mainstream English. In Years 11 and 12 VCE English, English Literature, ESL (English as a Second Language), Foundation English and VCAL Literacy and Oracy are all available to students. Such a repertoire of English studies allows students to tailor their studies in this subject to best reflect their strengths and abilities and so maximise their academic results.
Throughout their time at Nazareth College, a range of specialised activities, including Literacy support, guest speakers, dramatic performances of texts and enrichment classes are provided. These all enhance students’ learning experiences and encourage the pursuit of excellence in this subject.
