Each year Nazareth College fills the calendar with a wonderful variety of concerts, performances, recitals, musicals and dramatic performances.

Nazareth College encourages all students to take an active interest in the Performing Arts with a view towards developing confident, articulate and responsible citizens.  Contemporary research into the Performing Arts, and especially music education, has consistently shown that students who participate in the Performing Arts greatly enhance their prospects in the classroom and those who study a musical instrument and work intensively in an ensemble develop stronger communication skills, higher levels of concentration, better organisation and increased social confidence. This research is telling us that the benefits of study in the Performing Arts are felt across all areas of academic achievement and educational outcomes.

The Performing Arts are an integral and vibrant part of life at Nazareth College. Our purpose built complex has the facilities and space to give all students the opportunity to explore the possibilities available through work in Drama, Dance and Music.

The focus for ensembles and performance is on establishing and maintaining standards of excellence. Student’s work in the college production is acknowledged in the community as of the highest quality. As a consequence, many of our students graduate to pursue successful careers in the entertainment, music and theatre industries.

A variety of ensembles including Stage Band, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble and Choral groups are open to all students. Other more diverse music ensembles rehearse in the contemporary music program and allow students to explore individual creative opportunities in recording and composition. Students in the contemporary program regularly win composition awards in the state wide Kool Skools program which seeks to find talented composition and song writing students. The College also provides more advanced ensembles including Jazz and Chamber Ensemble and Vocal Group at both Middle and Senior School to allow advanced students to explore more challenging repertoire.

One of the most valuable aspects of the extracurricular performing arts program is the opportunities created for student leadership. Music Captains and Ensemble Leaders play an important role in organising and leading their House in the annual House Eisteddfod. They also work in collaboration with staff in the management and promotion of the variety of co-curricular ensembles, concerts and productions throughout the school year including the biannual South Australian Exchange Program with our sister school in Adelaide.

Instrumental Music Studies:

Nazareth College offers a comprehensive and exciting instrumental music studies program. All students attending the college participate in classroom music in the Junior levels. However, students can choose a more comprehensive music education through the Instrumental Music Program in which they receive instrument and ensemble tuition and the opportunity to study instrumental music through to VCE levels.

Nazareth offers individual and paired lessons with professional instrumental tutors/performers. Tuition is offered on brass (trumpet, trombone, tuba), woodwind (flute, clarinet, saxophone), percussion (tuned and untuned) and string instruments (guitar and bass guitar). In the Year 7 Program, some instruments are available for hire through the college avoiding the need to purchase during the initial stages. Applications for individual or paired lessons, and Year 7 lessons should be returned to the Accounts Office.

Students are encouraged to perform regularly, with a number of major performances as well as smaller chamber music evenings providing the opportunity for more intimate and dynamic performance experiences. The concert band also competes annually at either State or National Championships and can attend the annual Nazareth Exchange Program with our sister school in South Australia.

All ensembles participate in many liturgical and social functions, both on and off campus. The Choir also serves to foster the vocal talents of students, who are biennially given the opportunity to present a full musical production, which is presented at the college Wheeler Auditorium, Nazareth College.

Students studying music, drama and dance are offered many opportunities to perform in the college production, house eisteddfod, play and concerts. The performances seek to unite the wider college community in a celebration of student achievement as a performer in Dance, Drama or Music, or back stage through makeup, sound, lighting and other technical support roles.
